FIRE LTE testbeds for open EXperimentation

FLEX (FIRE LTE testbeds for open experimentation) has contributed a crucial missing piece in FIRE's infrastructure puzzle: cellular access technologies through Long-Term Evolution (LTE) and beyond. FLEX's experimentation environment features both open source platforms and configurable commercial equipment that span macro-cell, pico-cell and small-cell setups. FLEX builds upon FIRE testbed management and experiment control tools and has extended them to provide support for the LTE components, and has developed specialized monitoring tools and methodologies. Focus has been placed on mobility, with the establishment of both real and emulated mobility functionalities on the testbeds. FLEX has successfully organized two open calls, by attracting research groups to conduct sophisticated experiments, test innovative usages or provide functional extensions of LTE testbeds.
